Did you know that one of our most iconic species, the koala, remains on the endangered list in NSW, Queensland and the ACT?

In celebration of yesterday’s World Wildlife Day, we’re donating $100,000 to WIRES to protect and help more koalas before it’s too late.

The funding from The Lott will help the wildlife rescue organisation build a new koala rehabilitation centre in south-west Sydney.

With building due to start later this year, the Campbelltown facility will allow more sick, injured and orphaned koalas to receive care and be safely returned to the wild. It will also cut the time and distance travelled by WIRES volunteers and ambulances to get these koalas to the closest care.

Our Partnerships Manager Liz McPherson said WIRES’ work was crucial with the ever-increasing challenges and threat of extinction facing not only koalas but many native Australian animals.

“There’s nothing more iconic than seeing a koala out in its natural habitat, and it’s clear we need to do everything we can to protect these special and unique animals,” she said.

“Knowing that koalas are at threat of extinction, we’re thrilled to support WIRES for another year.”
